Pauline Dalais, a native of Newlands East, Durban, is a true powerhouse in the arts and entertainment industry. Her list of accomplishments is virtually endless, ranging from being an arts administrator and artistic manager to a stage and screen actress, voice artist, and casing director. With a passion for her craft and a dedication to making a positive impact in the world, Dalais has truly become a force to be reckoned with.
Born in Cato Manor and raised in Wentworth before settling in Newlands East, Dalais has always been proud of her mixed-race heritage. She completed her matric at Wentworth High before attending Durban Commerce & Computer College. Later, she embarked on studying law through UNISA, showcasing her determination and drive to excel academically.
Dalais stumbled upon the arts and entertainment industry 19 years ago while working at eThekwini Living Legend, Caroline Smart's ArtSmart offices. It was there that she played a vital role in producing the D'Arts Magazine, which ignited her passion for the industry.
Seventeen years ago, Dalais made her mark in the film industry when she joined Troubadour Productions, working alongside one of Durban's most prominent casting agents, Peter Gardner. Dalais found great joy in the casting process, identifying talented actors for various television, film, and modelling projects.
Throughout her illustrious career, Dalais has had the opportunity to work on numerous iconic productions. These include reality shows such as Survivor South Africa, Idols, Tropika Island of Treasure, and Fear Factor South Africa. She has also been involved in projects like Coca-Cola Popstars and blockbuster films like Singham 2 and Kings of Mulberry Street. Moreover, Dalais has contributed to prestigious events like the Mama's (MTV Africa Music Awards), The Hilton Arts Festival, The National Arts Festival in Makanda, The Durban Theatre Awards, and Cradle of Creativity.
However, Dalais reveals that her favorite aspect of the film industry is the audition process. She thrives on identifying raw talent and nurturing it to bring out the best in each actor. Witnessing the magic that unfolds when individuals fully transform into their characters on set is what fuels her passion for the craft.
When asked about her greatest achievement, Dalais humbly states that it lies in "mastering the art of peace in a storm." She recognizes that our attitudes and actions directly influence what we attract into our lives, emphasizing the importance of positivity and self-reflection.
Currently, Dalais is involved in several projects simultaneously. She is the KZN Coordinator for the Social Employment Fund (SEF) Project, working hard to create employment opportunities. Additionally, she is the Founder and Director of Drama Mama Community Arts, a Newlands East-based organization focused on using art for social change. The organization also provides therapeutic healing through arts programs for traumatized children and youth, further demonstrating Dalais' commitment to making a difference.
Dalais is passionate about advocating for gender-based violence and working with individuals from marginalized communities. Her dedication to uplifting others is evident in her work with the youth, as Drama Mama Community Arts offers its programs for free. Recently, the organization received a generous donation of toys for the children from Tekayha Sukuram, an actress, dancer, and model.
Beyond her busy professional life, Dalais enjoys indulging in the latest hits by Trey Songs, French Montana, AKA, and local favourites like Lamboginny. She also finds solace in reading, traveling, and nurturing her social connections.
As for her dream holiday destination, Dalais would love to visit London to experience a "GINspiration" adventure. This desire showcases her adventurous spirit and openness to new experiences.
Pauline Dalais has undoubtedly carved out a prominent place for herself in the arts and entertainment industry. Her unwavering dedication, passion, and commitment to using art for positive change continue to inspire those around her. With her motto of "Keep on doing good until good is all you see in the world," Dalais is undoubtedly making a lasting impact on the industry and the lives she touches along the way.
